Mendicants and Merchants in the Medieval Mediterranean International
    Medieval Congress
    Kalamazoo, Michigan May 7-10, 2009

Describing the friars as the "merchants of the church," Francisco
García-Serrano begins the introduction to his book, Preachers of the
City: The Expansion of the Dominican Order in Castile, by placing
Spanish Dominicans into a broader historical context.  In doing so,
he highlights the many similarities between mendicants and merchants
that developed between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries
throughout the Mediterranean, but the relationships between the two
communities have rarely been addressed elsewhere in the scholarship
on this period.  Garcia-Serrano points out that in cities and urban
centers throughout the medieval Mediterranean and beyond, friars and
merchants crossed paths daily, often living parallel lives that
included travel to other countries and interaction and exchange with
a wide variety of people with the ultimate goal of "selling" a
particular product.  To that end, both groups commonly used
vernacular languages in order to communicate with as many people as
possible.  The connections between the mendicants and the merchants
are not limited to the similarities in their lifestyles.  While the
friars provided instruction to the merchant community in medieval
universities, the merchants provided financial support for the
ministries of the friars.  Furthermore, the Mendicant Orders offered
the merchants a new kind of spirituality that was tailored to their
needs and, with the support of the friars, merchants began to develop
    their own confraternities.

This session is meant to encourage an interdisciplinary discussion of
the relationships between mendicants and merchants that will provide
insight into the artistic, literary, and religious exchanges that
took place throughout the Mediterranean and beyond between the
thirteenth and fifteenth centuries.  Because this interaction between
the mendicants and the merchants was so extensive, we welcome papers
from many disciplines, including but not limited to history, art
history, literature, music, and religious studies.

Proposals should be for a fifteen to twenty-minute paper (the length
of time to be determined after all proposals have been received).
Please submit your abstract of approximately 300 words with a
completed Participant Information Form to Emily Kelley at
ek236@cornell.edu no later than September 1, 2008. The Participant

Oggetto: Nuovo Centro di Studi Ebraici

    Gentili Colleghi,

    Giancarlo Lacerenza.

    "History as Creative Writing"

(For publication in Volume 14, 2010)

The editors of Rethinking History: The Journal of Theory and Practice invite contributions to an issue entitled History as Creative Writing," the first of several issues, to be published over several years, intended to highlight the journals longstanding interest in experiments in the literary dimensions of historical writing. (See,

for example, Alun Munslow and Robert A. Rosenstone, eds. 2004.

     Experiments in Rethinking History.)

What we continue to look forin narrative, interpretation, theory, or some combination of two or three--is evidence of a struggle not just with evidence or argument but also with language and with form.

That struggle might lead to some unusual structure, or plot, or voice (or voices), or point of view (or points of view). It might lead to some uncommon (for academic history) use of metaphor, imagery, or rhythm. It might push a writer to the outer limits of the universe of non-fiction writingor out of that universe altogether. It might produce, in the name of historical understanding, a memoir, poem, or piece of a play. We welcome contributions from writers at any stage in their careers, at work in any field, and engaged with the past in any imaginable way. We expect pieces of various lengths, but hope that none will be a word more or less than it needs to be.

The deadline for contributions to the first issue of Volume 14 is December 1, 2009.

Joshua Heschel (Varsavia 1907–New York 1972), di cui quest’an-

no si celebra il centenario della nascita. Di origini polacche e tra-

dizione famigliare rabbinica e chassidica, Heschel studiò a Vilna e

in ebraico, yiddish e tedesco.

    Calls for Papers

British Association for Jewish Studies: The theme of this year's BAJS meeting is 'Normative Judaism'. Topics may pertain to any time period and geographical or cultural context in Jewish Studies. 'Normativity' and 'marginality' are terms that may be interpreted broadly, and the expectation is that both essentialist and non-essentialist approaches will be presented. Proposals for papers (and panels) exploring the relationship between 'Judaism' and 'Jewishness' more generally, and/or investigating the impact of non-Jewish influences upon Jewish thought and practice, are especially welcome.  Along with proposals please submit a brief list of major publications or cv of no more than one paragraph. Single paper proposals should be no longer than 250 words and panel proposals need not exceed one page. Please e-mail proposals to daniel.langton@manchester.ac.uk, with 'BAJS 2008' in the subject line. The deadline for paper abstracts and proposed panels is 15 February 2008.

Jewish Law Association: The Association welcomes historical, dogmatic, philosophical and comparative approaches to Jewish law. Papers may be offered on any topic/period of Jewish law, though preference may be given to those on the theme of Normativity and Authority in Jewish Law. Please submit an abstract (100 to 200 words) of your proposed paper by e-mail (the preferred method) to bernard.jackson@manchester.ac.uk or by regular mail to Prof. Bernard Jackson, Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Manchester, Samuel Alexander Building, Lime Grove, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK, at your earliest convenience, and in any event no later than February 15th, 2008. The Conference Organising Committee will decide which papers are accepted and how they are arranged in the programme, which if necessary will include a number of parallel sessions.

Brown-Harvard Graduate Student Conference in Italian Studies
at Brown University, March 14-15, 2008.

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    "Cultural Margins/Marginal Cultures"

On behalf of the graduate students of the Department of Italian Studies at
Brown University and the Italian Section of the Department of Romance
Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, we are pleased to announce
the first joint Graduate Student Conference for Italian Studies, to be held
on 14-15 March, 2008 at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

This conference seeks to explore a variety of perspectives in Italian
Studies which respond to the question of how a culture constructs and
    deconstructs its centers and margins.

What cultural conventions and practices define the notions of marginality
and centrality? How are margins created? What are the dynamics of exchanges
between cultural centers and cultural margins? For whom is a cultural
experience marginal? How does marginality become central?

We welcome papers that investigate and assess issues related to marginal
experiences in all historical periods. Proposals may address, but are not
    restricted to, the following topics:

-- language, dialects, and minority languages
    -- migration and exile
    -- national identity and nationalism
    -- geographical and cartographic borders
    -- spatial and temporal limits
    -- colonial and postcolonial experiences
    -- gender and sexuality
    -- minority subjects and communities
-- experiences of subalternity and cultural hierarchies
    -- conformity and defiance/deviance
-- religious experiences of orthodoxy and heterodoxy
-- artistic and literary canons and counter-canons

Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes (approximately 8-10 pages of
double-spaced text) and may be in Italian or English.

Please send an anonymous abstract (no longer than 300 words) and a cover
sheet with the title of your paper, your name, affiliation, contact
information (including telephone and e-mail address), and technical
equipment needed, as Microsoft Word file attachment to chiasmi@brown.edu.

Abstracts must be received no later than December 21, 2007

    Amsterdam Congress, 22-28 August, 2010

Guidelines for selecting organizers, discussants and contributors.

    communicants.

    1. By January 31st 2008, all National Committees, International Affiliated
Organisations and Internal Commissions should send to the Secretary
General proposals for organizers, discussants and contributors for
    sessions.

    2.  Format des séances
    Types of sessions:

    I.    Thèmes majeurs (3) : organizer, discussant et maximum de 12
    communicants
Major Themes (3): organizer, discussant plus a maximum of 12 contributors

II.   Thèmes spécialisés (20): organizer, discussant et maximum de 6
    communicants
Specialized Themes (20): organizer, discussant plus a maximum of 6
    contributors

III.  Tables rondes (15): organizer et maximum de 4 communicants
Round Tables (15): organizer, and a maximum of 4 contributors

IV.  Séances conjointes (10) : organizer, discussant et maximum de 6
    communicants
Joint Sessions (10) : organizer, discussant plus a maximum of 6 contributors

    3.  Organizers

    a) The organizer is the key person for each session.  Chosen for their
knowledge of the field and historiography, organizers will have the final
say in the choice of participants.  For all sessions ONE organizer must be
identified.  This to facilitate communications between the secretariat of
ICHS, the secretariat of the Amsterdam Congress and the participants.
Please note the change of format for round tables : The organizer will
prepare a text that will be distributed in advance to the four
participants and discussed during the meeting.  For the other sessions,
the role of the organizer is not to divulge the substance of the
presenters' communications but to introduce the theme and its problems.

    soit soumis.

    b) Please send us your proposals for organizers, giving for each the
reasons for your selection in a few lines (do not send CVs).  In all
instances, please ensure that you list the complete address (affiliation,
street address, telephone/fax, and e-mail).  Also, please make sure that
the person you are suggesting agrees to have her name submitted.

    c) Please note that ICHS wishes to avoid selecting the same person from
one congress to the other as organizer.  To ensure the true international
scope of the congress, care must be taken to reach a proper balance
    between regions, countries and gender.

    4.  Discussants

For each session, a discussant must be proposed.  This person will be
responsible for outlining the highlights of the papers and for guiding the
general discussion. Also, please make sure that the person you are
suggesting agrees to have her/ his name submitted.  Please send the
complete address (affiliation, street address, telephone/fax, and e-mail).

    5.  Communicants
    Contributors

If you have some proposals for individual papers, please submit them; if
you send in more than one for a given theme, you must put them in order.
Please ensure that you send the complete address (affiliation, street
    address, telephone/fax, and e-mail).

    6.  Sélection finale des organizers et discussants
Final selection of organizers and discussants

A sub-committee of the Bureau, consisting of Hilda Sabato, José Luis
Peset, Pierre Ducrey, William Jordan et Jean-Claude Robert, will prepare
the final list of organizers and discussants which will then be submitted
to the members of the Bureau for approval.  The list of proposed
individual papers will be send by the Secretary General to the organizers.
The choice of organizers and discussants for Joint Sessions will be made
by the proposing organizations in conjunction with the Secretary General.
In all instances, to ensure the true international scope of the congress,
care must be taken to reach a proper balance between regions, countries,
    age and gender.

    7.  Diffusion
    Announcement

Once the chosen organizers will have confirmed their acceptation, the list
of themes and organizers will be put on the web site of ICHS and that of
the Congress.  Any person wishing to contact them will be able to do so.
However, organizers will have to enforce the maximum numbers of
contributors as well as the international and gender balance.

The organizers of the following four sessions sponsored by Italians and Italianists at the 2008 International Medieval Congress in Kalamazoo have extended the deadline for abstracts to September 25, 2007. Please let us know asap if you are interested in submitting and pass this CFP on to other interested colleagues. Thank you.

    1. Women of Medieval Italy: Papers in Honor of Christine Meek
This session brings scholars of medieval Italy together to honor Christine Meek who is retiring after a long, distinguished career at Trinity College, Dublin. She was a pioneer in the fields of women’s and the social history of medieval Italy. Her many publications, based on notarial and legal records of 13th and 14th century Lucca, have influenced generations of scholars. She has been a Kalamazoo fan for several years and has worked to bring together younger medievalists from the UK and USA by organizing sessions at Kalamazoo and Leeds.

    2. Convivencia in Italy? Christians, Muslims, and Jews on the Peninsula
A session examining the relations among these three religious cultures on the Italian peninsula. Response to this year's sessions on Islam and Medieval Italy was enthusiastic, and both sessions on this topic were very well-attended. The organizers now hope to build on this enthusiasm with a session incorporating the Jews into the discussion. As well, such a session will help to bridge the traditional gap between scholars working on northern and southern Italy.

    3. New Perspectives on Boccaccio
While Boccaccio studies often still rely on a more traditional philological approach, scholars have begun to adopt fresh theoretical reading models, for instance by exploring how language functions in constructing sexual, cultural, religious, and social identities. Recent interdisciplinary studies of Boccaccio’s sources and influences, mythography, feminism, ethnicity, and material culture have similarly enhanced analyses of his works. The innovative perspectives offered in this panel will call attention to the flexibility and potentiality of current critical approaches to generate meaningful readings of medieval cultural productions.

    4. Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio and Italian National Identity
We seek to create a panel that explores the relation between any or all of the tre corone and their works in the various constructions of a mythic Italian national identity. The study of the formation of Italian nationalism is prevalent within the field of modern Italian literature but not within the medieval Italian period. This panel will address the implications of this critical approach to Italian medieval studies and consider the ways in which editorial practices, commentaries, Italian and American critical traditions, and even the formation of the Western canon impacted upon the status of the tre corone over the centuries.

Kalamazoo 2008, 43d International Congress on Medieval Studies
    Call for papers:
(The session is jointly sponsored by AARHMS and SSPHS)
"Beyond missionizing: the Church and religious minorities in daily life".
Much has been written on the efforts of the medieval Church to bring Europe's religious minorities-- Muslims and Jews-- into the fold by means of polemical arguments, active proselytizing and forcible missionizing campaigns. However it is becoming
increasingly clear that conversionary activities directed at non-Christians often had to confront deeply entrenched social, economic and institutional structures, some of  which the Church had a direct interest in preserving. The session should draw attention to the substrata  of ordinary, day-to-day interactions between the clergy and the members of religious
minorities. We are especially interested in contacts that took place at the local level, where the clergy engaged their non-Christian neighbors in property transactions, sought credit from Jewish moneylenders, employed Muslim and Jewish servants and  laborers, exercised jurisdiction over non-Christian communities, etc. The session is intended to bring together scholars who are interested in investigating this important but understudied aspect of interfaith relations in medieval and early modern
Europe. Studies examining similar interactions in non-European and/or early modern contexts  are also very welcome.

*Chronicle into History: Authors and Texts Between Past and Present* This session invites papers on chronicles and the writing of history from the Middle Ages through contemporary times. Authors specific to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, such as Dino Compagni, Giovanni Villani, and anonymous authors, through the centuries of Italian literature to those from the Post-War period, such as Chiodi, Antonelli or chroniclers of the resistance, are equally encouraged. Please send one page abstract (in English or Italian) to:
    Giovanni.Spani@trincoll.edu <mailto:Giovanni.Spani@trincoll.edu>

*Culture, Meaning, Truth: The Role of Intellectuals in Contemporary Italy* This panel invites contributions that explore the role of intellectuals in contemporary Italy. All approaches are welcome but especially those which reflect on the links and ruptures within the long-standing and distinctly Italian preoccupation with the role of intellectuals. Of special interest are also papers that discuss new forms of intellectuality and alternative, non-orthodox spaces for critical intervention, as those theorized by the discussion of post-Fordism and the emergent centrality of immaterial labour in contemporary society. Our objective is to foster a more complex, varied and nuanced understanding of the relationship between culture and politics in contemporary Italy. Eugenio Bolongaro, McGill University:
    eugenio.bolongaro@mcgill.ca <mailto:eugenio.bolongaro@mcgill.ca>

*From Paper to Screen and Vice Versa* This session invites contributions on the study of the relationship between literature and cinema, from a variety of perspectives. Welcomed topics may include: cinematic adaptations of modern and contemporary Italian literary works, from both a theoretical and practical approach; reciprocal influences between the two forms, intended, for instance, as personal encounters between the author and the filmmaker; influences of cinematographic themes on literary works; and the success of literary works in relation to adaptations in different historical, national and social contexts. Daniela De Pau, Drexel University, Philadelphia PA 19104; e-mail
    dd62@drexel.edu <mailto:dd62@drexel.edu>

*The Image of America in Italian Culture and Literature* The proposal intends to consider all papers that shed more light on the close cultural and literary relationships between Italy and the United States and to clarify how the image of each has determined their particular view of each other and their respective artistic and literary creations. Submit a two hundred fifty-word abstract via e-mail to panel chair, Vincenzo Bollettino at:
    Bollettinov@mail.Montclair.edu <mailto:Bollettinov@mail.Montclair.edu>

*The Interplay of Literature, Music and the Visual Arts during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance* The panel welcomes interdisciplinary papers (in both Italian and English) that consider the interplay between Italian literature, music and/or visual arts. Papers should contemplate how artistic theories and production, as witnessed by contemporary literature, express new trends of civilization within the Italian culture. Please e-mail a 300-word abstract to:
cerocchi@princeton.edu <mailto:cerocchi@princeton.edu> or mail it to: Marco Cerocchi Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures La Salle University 1900 W. Olney Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19141

*Italian American Experience* Papers in the session should explore the relationships of contemporary Italian women's writings and feminist theories of any stripe. Ideally this panel would examine the relationship ( or lack thereof) of diverse feminist theories on a wide-range of women's writings in Italian. Entries on immigrant writings as well as works of writers living outside of Italy are welcome. Dora Labate, Rutgers University
    alabate@rci.rutgers.edu <mailto:alabate@rci.rutgers.edu>

*Italian Feminism and Women's Writings* This panel seeks papers that address the changing relationships between feminist theories of any stripe and contemporary Italian women's writings. Carol Lazzaro-Weis, University of Missouri
